19th century 'Jamaica Scholars'

dates with complete or partially complete information:

1st Scholar - 1881   1882   1883   1884   1885   1890   1893   1895   1898   1900

Ten out of the first twenty Jamaica Scholars received all or part of their education at York Castle which accepted pupils without regard to colour, class or status of birth.

York Castle Methodist High School, St Ann

1876-1900

I have now found the names and schools of the Jamaica Scholarship winners 1881-1900, and I have found basic information on the careers of most of them. I will try as a start to get that information on the site first, then go on to more background information on each of them; if you can help with information on any of the Scholars please contact me at jamaican_sites(at)care2(dot)com.

I also need to outline the history of the Scholarship during this period, and the arguments used against its continuation.

This site is dedicated to my son, Richard, and all the other young men and women who have been awarded the Jamaica Scholarship since 1881 and made their contribution to the island's development over the years.

I have tried to be as factually accurate as possible on these pages, but there are certainly errors which need to be corrected. I shall be grateful for information on any such needed corrections.

My opinions are another matter, but I have tried to keep them to a minimum anyway!
