19th century 'Jamaica Scholars'

1882

Alfred Ernest Tomlinson, son of Nicholas and Rebecca Ann Tomlinson, was born at Craigie, St Elizabeth, Jamaica, on the 19th September, 1863. [Another account gives his date of birth in 1866, but the earlier date seems more likely.]

From 1874 to 1881 Tomlinson was a Foundationer at the Munro and Dickenson School, Potsdam, St Elizabeth, Jamaica, under William Simms, M.A., who had graduated from Christ’s College, Cambridge in 1867.

In 1882 Tomlinson was successful in the London University Matriculation Examination, passing in the First Division, and was awarded the Jamaica Scholarship. He was admitted to Christ's College, Cambridge as a 'pensioner' in October 1882 and graduated B.A. in 1885. One account claims that he rowed for Cambridge, and was presented with an oar, but I have not been able to confirm that!

On his return to Jamaica he taught at York Castle School from 1886 to 1890.

In 1893 A E Tomlinson married Ethel Mary Buie Carvalho, daughter of Henry Carvalho, J.P. of Florence Hall, Falmouth, Jamaica. She was born on October 22nd, 1867 in Falmouth. She was sent to Scotland in August, 1877, [to school, presumably] and returned to Jamaica in September, 1886.

Tomlinson was appointed headmaster of Rusea’s School, Lucea, Hanover, in 1890, where he served until his early death in 1897.

His wife, Mrs Buie Tomlinson, served for at least two decades as Headmistress at Mannings High School in Westmoreland, starting in 1899. I have so far been unable to establish the date of her death.
