Edward Robert Charles Earle, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. was born in South London, England on April 2, 1866. He was the son of Edward Muirhead Earle. He was educated at Potsdam School, Jamaica, 1875-83, during the headmastership of the Rev William Simms. When Simms moved to the Jamaica High School, Earle continued his studies there.

In December 1882, when the great Kingston fire took place, Earle sat the Senior Cambridge Local Examination (the first year this examination was held in Jamaica) and passed with second class honours.

'The fact is published in the “Gazette” of the 29th May that the two Jamaica candidates who presented themselves for the Matriculation examination of the London University in January last, have passed as follows:
Honours Division
1015. Earle, Edward Robert Charles, Jamaica High School. (This gentleman is placed next to the second candidate in the original Honours List and has obtained the number of marks qualifying for an exhibition.)
First Division
1014. Pasmore, Edwin Stephen, Private Tuition.' 

Studied Medicine at University College, London, England, awarded the M.B in May 1890 and returned to Jamaica. 

Private practice in Malvern St. Elizabeth in July 1890. 

District Medical Officer of Buff Bay District 9/1892; 

Lucea District 8/1896; 

Black River District 1/1901; 

Four Paths, Clarendon 6/1904, and subsequently Medical Officer of Health there. 

Health Officer and D.M.O. at Port Royal 7/1915.

 Dr Earle was married twice. His first wife, Isabel, died in 1904. His second wife, Marie, was the mother of his son, also Edward, 'Ned', who also attended Potsdam/Munro and served in the British army in World War II.
